Helly Hansen Women's Challenge 2026 — What a Weekend! ![]()
What an incredible weekend it was on the water. The 31st Helly Hansen Women's Challenge — the grand finale of the Sydney Harbour Women's Keelboat Series — brought together a competitive fleet of 31 boats from eight clubs, racing in light south-easterly conditions that tested crews' tactical decision-making and boat handling. Now in its 31st year, MYC continues to play a vital role in promoting women's participation and development in sailing.![]()
Saturday Racing — Centreboard Divisions![]()
Saturday's one-design racing saw fantastic competition across the Hansa and ILCA divisions. In the Hansa division, the race was won by MYC President Lisa Callaghan, sailing alongside Year 4 junior sailor Gia — a wonderful pairing that captures exactly what this event is all about. The ILCA division was claimed by Peta Rose. Congratulations to all our Saturday competitors who set the tone for a brilliant weekend.![]()
Sunday Racing — Keelboat Divisions![]()
Division 1![]()
Defending champions Mondo delivered a performance to remember. The Sydney 38, skippered by MYC President Lisa Callaghan with an all-female crew, claimed a remarkable clean sweep — 1st Scratch in the Mixed Division, 1st All-Female, and overall PHS honours. Despite a slow start, the crew worked their way through the fleet, the lead changing multiple times. In a dramatic finale, they overhauled the Summit King 40 Jambo (StephanieCook, MHYC) and the Lyons 54 MV Kayle (Wendy Tuck, NCYC) on the final leg, crossing the line just five seconds ahead following a shortened course. Second overall on PHS went to Jambo, with the Adams 10 Sirius (Kate Leeson, MYC) rounding out the podium in third.![]()
Division 2![]()
Division 2 delivered equally compelling racing. Jenny Danks (CYCA) took line honours and first on handicap aboard the Etchells Total Nuisance, delivering a composed and consistent performance throughout. Second place went to Jade Tokarczyk (MHYC) on the Far East 28R Cool Runnings, with Rhoslyn Humphreys (MHYC) taking third aboard the J/24 Ace. ![]()

The People Who Make It Happen![]()
A huge thank you to Race Director and Vice-Commodore Catherine Thornton-Rofe for orchestrating the two-day event with her trademark expertise. We were honoured to welcome Jackie Sapir (CYCA) as Race Officer on Sunday, with Commodore Stephen Teudt, Graham Radford, Stephen Smith, Rolf Stockburger, and Arthur Crothers completing the race committee for the yachts. On the water for the centreboard fleet, Club Captain Bruce Davis served as Race Officer, ably assisted by Pam Davis — thank you all for giving your weekend to make this event run so smoothly.![]()
Every key moment of the weekend was immortalised by our wonderful club photographer Marg Fraser-Martin, who has supported the Women's Challenge for many years with extraordinary generosity and skill. And the post-race hospitality? All down to the brilliant Maz Radford (Vice President) and Jane Nixon who ensured competitors (and our guests) felt welcome and were well fed, MYC-style.![]()
Off the Water![]()
The racing was only half the story. The event's social atmosphere was vibrant, with competitors from eight clubs enjoying post-race hospitality, prizegiving celebrations, and Helly Hansen prizes — a reminder of the strong community that makes this event so special.![]()
This year's Women's Challenge raffle raised $650 for the Northern Beaches Women's Shelter, a cause close to our hearts. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and supported such an important local organisation.![]()
It is worth pausing to reflect on what this weekend represents. With a board of four women and three men, MYC's commitment to equal representation runs deep — and events like the Women's Challenge are both a product of that commitment and a driver of it. We are proud to be a sailing club for everyone.![]()
Our Event Sponsors![]()
The Helly Hansen Women's Challenge would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Our sincere thanks to Helly Hansen, Scott Sails, and Kieser Mosman for their continued support of women's sailing at MYC.
Great pix Marg's Yacht Photos❤️
Thank you race committee on Legacy for the great images captured today… this being the penultimate race of the MYC Club Champs as well as the last race in Combined Clubs Sunday Series, just one race to go and Stephen Teudt on Mondo is looking to take out Division 1 if he can keep up his stellar performance in the last race. A drop of 2 points today isn’t bad going, well done. In division 2 ÇaVa and Kia Kaha are on equal points with Phil in the lead on countback. The last race will be the decider in this division… stay tuned
Day 1 of the ILCA Metros. Great capture Marg's Yacht Photos as always👍
